Worldwide Power Products to Host Open House for Offshore Technology Conference; Demonstrate Bi-Fuel System Equipped Generator

(PRWEB) April 25, 2014

Worldwide Power Products (WPP), a power-generation equipment provider to industrial and petroleum clients worldwide, today announced it will sponsor an Open House on May 7 at its Northwest Houston headquarters (5711 Brittmoore Rd.). The event is timed to coincide with the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), which will be held May 5-8 at Reliant Park in Houston. The Open House will feature a load test of a Caterpillar C15 400kW generator set equipped with a bi-fuel system. WPP will also present information on its diverse array of solutions and services, and representatives of generator manufacturer HIPOWER SYSTEMS will be on hand to discuss their equipment.

“Although all of our generators remain popular with WPP customers, we have seen a real surge in interest regarding bi-fuel units, which burn both diesel and natural gas,” said WPP VP of Sales & Engineering Dave Vennie. “These systems are of particular interest to offshore operators, because they can burn well-head gas that is otherwise flared off at the well site.” (The ability to burn well-head gas is subject to gas quality and other application conditions.)

A bi-fuel system is an affordable and efficient means of operating industrial diesel engines utilizing both diesel and natural gas. These innovative solutions, which require no modification to the internal components of the engine, allow for operation on natural gas up to a maximum of 70% (with an average of 50%) of the fuel required to maintain the desired speed and load.

Should the natural gas supply be disrupted (or should any other problem arise), the engine will revert back to burning 100% diesel automatically with no modifications or adjustments. Operators can also switch the unit back to 100% diesel operation manually.

Due to the price differential between natural gas and diesel fuel, Vennie says, companies can save dramatically on fuel costs with a bi-fuel-equipped diesel engine―up to 50% for companies that purchase their gas―more if they are burning well-head gas.

In addition to these benefits, bi-fuel systems give companies the advantages of reduced exhaust emissions, use of available or interruptible gas supplies, and reduced requirements for onsite fuel storage. “This Open House provides a great opportunity for anyone interested in bifuel technology to learn more about it and see it in action,” said Vennie. “It’s truly an amazing technology that we believe will transform the future of diesel-based power generation.”
